| Application of Superconductivity Technology |
| Since the discovery of this technology, the potential application of the superconductivity phenomenon enables the "technical revolution" in various industry fields. The superconducting phenomenon does not occur unconditionally. A superconducting state occurs only under limited temperature, magnetic field, and current density, and the upper limit values are called critical temperature (Tc), critical magnetic field (Hc), and critical current density (Jc), respectively. Until now, these upper limits were the obstacles to industrial applications, and application of superconducting technology was limited to such field as MRI for medical care. However, development of oxide high-temperature superconductor and improvement in critical current density of superconducting wire materials enhanced the feasibility of practical application of superconductivity in new fields. The possible fields of application include the environment and energy represented by power cables and the transportation industry represented by linear-motor cars. |

Sumitomo HTS Coil Application |
Sumitomo and Japanese partners have developed the world's first practical-level High Temperature Superconducting (HTS)POD motor cooled by liquid nitrogen.
Features of Superconducting Motor:
- Smaller and lighter than conventional motors
(5000kW motor is 1/10 in volume and 1/5 in weight)
- Higher fuel efficiency
- Easy increase of power output
- Cooled by low-cost,easy-to-handle liquid nitrogen
- Motor surface is kept at room temperature
- Very little noise and leakage magnetic lux
- Uses "off the shelf" Sumitomo’s DI-BSCCO
