Flexible Printed Circuits (FPC) represents an evolution of the Printed Circuit Board as well as conventional Wiring Applications.
The flexibility allows for ease of assembly as well as expanding design restraints to three dimensions. It is the answer to mass
and density problems in package and interconnect engineering.
Sumitomo Electric Industries began development of FPC in 1969.
In 1975, SEI established a Flexible Printed Circuits Section in the Electronic Wire Division. A manufacturing plant was established
in 1980 in Nagoya, Japan. New manufacturing lines were developed in Shiga, Japan in 1990 and Shenzehen, China in 1994. The last
facility opened in the Philippines in 1996. The FPC division sent personnel to Sumitomo Electric USA in 1995 to provide U.S.
Customers a business liaison as well as technical support. In May of 2000, Sumitomo Electric Print Circuits, Inc., officially became
a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. A new Production Facility/ Engineering Headquarters was established
in Minakuchi, Japan. This new facility will be fully operational by August 2000 and has already shown improvements to "quick turn"
prototype lead times.
Today, SEI is considered one of the top suppliers to Consumer Electronics Manufacturers in the Japanese Domestic market, as well
as to Computer Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Manufacturers in the World Market.
